Mid-Eastern Skateboard Series
Jay Cabler
Hometown: Nashville, TN (Now: Knoxville, TN)
Still skating? Yup, just built a mini half in the backyard. Vert when I can
get it. Go to Louisville.
Occupation: Web designer, teacher
Favorite MESS memory: Waking up with my knees stuck to the sheets at
Dickmann's house after trying to knee slide on Brett's ramp with no knee
pads on. I always wondered what Kevin's mam thought when she saw that.
Influence of MESS: MESS helped to keep skating alive at its
lowest point. At the time, we were the only skaters east of the Mississippi.
This attitude help to keep skating alive as the east coast made its way west.
Without skaters from the MESS contests moving to Cal. with this attitude,
skateboarding would be much different today. It was all about the act and
process of skating and doing something that had never been done before. The
MESS was all about true dedication to the sport of skateboarding.
Other comments: Just cuz your 40+ don't mean you can't stop doing the thing that you
dream of. Drop that hill, carve a bowl, do some grinds. Teach the kids
where their roots are.

Above: One of a few people to do a trick so well, it got a new name whenever he did it. Jayback at MESS #1 in Ohio.
Right: Lousiville attracts old skaters like moths to a fullpipe. Jay living the dream, summer 2002.
